Julian Goldswain was privileged to be a part of a very special rite of passage just outside Walmer Township, Port Elizabeth in June and July 2000. This initiation is known as “Ulwaluko” in the Xhosa community . Being an “outsider” to the community, it’s very rare for a white South African man to witness and photograph a group of “Abakwetha” initiates. He was fortunate that a fellow art school student at N.M.M.U. (ex Port Elizabeth Technikon) trusted him enough to give access to this unique part of his life. Julian’s friend was in his 20’s at the time these pictures were taken but young Xhosa men from the age of 17 can be initiated into manhood. More text is available.
