This collection is a sample of the paintings and photographs housed at the Albany History Museum.
The collection of photographs concentrates on the architecture and urban and outlying environment of Grahamstown. The photographs have been entrusted to the care of the Albany Museum through the generosity of donors. They are available to the public on request for private or public use. Copyright conditions apply to all the images and copies of images must be acknowledged to the Albany Museum, as the owner. The photographs cover a time period from when photography started in the Eastern Cape in the 1850s to present day views.
The copies of the sample of paintings in the Art Collection housed at the Albany History Museum represent some of the most famous landscapes by Thomas Baines, portraits of local residents and Xhosa chiefs by Frederick Timpson I’Ons and works by other notable artists.
