Drum Stories Description: DM2005020708:SAED:MUSIC:THEATRE:PERSONALITY:JAN1956 - Manhattan Brothers Mellow - (Left to right: Rufus Khoza, Ronnie Sehume, Joe Mogotsi, Nathan 'Dambuza' Mdledle with Miriam Makeba.) For 21 years now they have been South Africa's Kings of Song. In November, 1955, at the Bantu Men's Social Centre, Johannesburg the Manhattan Brothers celebrated 21 years in Show Business. In the gala opening of the anniversary celebrations the Brothers crashed through a paper screen into their current hit-parade song...'The `Urge'. In the words of the song, they told of their love and devotion to the stage...A year ago the Manhattan Brothers discovered a great voice in Miriam Makeba. She was just a small-town girl with a voice, which was about all she had. They saw possibilities in her and signed her for a year. The backing group was: Norman Martins (drums) Jacob 'Mzala' Lepere (bass) Fix Qinta (piano) Randolph Chose (trumpet) Kippie Moeketsi (clarinet) MacKay Davashe (tenor sax). Drum Social Histories Description: DM2000081409:SAED:APARTHEID:JUL1976 - The day Our Kids Lost Faith - Soweto Uprising: marching Kids, in a mood common to school kids the world over, happy that they were not in class, good naturedly protesting against the use of Afrikaans a amedium of instruction at their schools. They march from Naledi Township, at the south western end of Soweto, collecting others on their route to Orlando East, the north eastern end of the vast complex. If the police had not tried to wrest the posters from the children, if they had not tried to arrest any of them, if they had not tried to set dogs on to them, if they had not fired shots, June 16 would not have been as black a day as it turned out to be. Married with two wives and six children, he lives with them in an extended family home in Bauchi town. In 2000 he returned from Jos, Plateau state capital, where he was working as a shoe maker. In 2001, on one faithfull day, a young boy brought a damaged soccer ball for him to mend and after successfully patching it and subsequently doing the same for other people on different occasions, he was convinced he could make the ball from scratch with locally sourced materials. Between 2001 and 2009, Malam Umar has trained well over 30 young boys and passer-bye's on how to make soccer balls and some of them have going ahead in the trade and are making a living from it in different parts of the country.(Credit: Adolphus Opara/Twenty Ten/Africa Media Online) Collections: Twenty Ten Subcollections:
