On 29th November 2009, the FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke and the Executive Mayor of Cape Town Dan Plato set off a week long schedule of festivities in Cape Town by switching on the Christmas Lights in Adderley Street that culminated with the FIFA Final Draw at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Friday December 4th 2009.
The 2000-strong carnival parade that marked the 42nd official switch-on of the festival lights was naturally heavily influenced by a soccer theme.
According to reports nearly 120,000 people turned up to take part in the day and night-long festivities and watch the concert graced by a catalogue of top South African bands and singers including Jozi, the Rockets and Emo Adams.
