Pippa Hetherington was commissioned to shoot for Africa!Ignite, a not-for-profit development agency in Kwazulu-Natal who focus on rural enterprise development. Africa!Ignite facilitates rural and marginalised communites’ participation in the economy, in society and in public discourse through unique communication, distribution, enterprise development and cause-related marketing services.
In partnership with Shake the World, Africa!Ignite is raising awareness on the Millenium Development Goals set in September 2000 by world leaders at United Nations. Shake the World are selling colour coded beaded bracelets to symbolise each of the 8 goals, and the bracelets are being made by crafters across KZN who have been linked into the campaign through Africa!Ignite.
The five-day shoot took Pippa into some of the most remote and rural areas of KZN, often only accessible on foot (through rivers and up and down hills) – from Izingolweni, Magabheni, Eshowe, Isandlwana, Nqutu, Ulundi, KwaHlabisa, Bangizwe, and back to Mzinyathi.
