Johannesburg, South Africa
In 1989 Williams began to work for Reuters covering the transition to ANC rule and for the following five years he covered South Africa’s transition to democratic rule. One of the most significant moments was witnessing and photographing Nelson Mandela’s release from prison on the 11th of February 1990. There was immediate world interest in Mandela the man and also what he would do to bring about peaceful change in South Africa. At that time photographers and journalists were given unusually high access to Mandela’s activities and as such Williams was able to capture intimate and profound moments during this period.
In 1991 Williams started to contribute to the South African documentary collective, Afrapix and later went on to become a founder member and manager of the South Photographs Agency.
His work is housed in the permanent collections of The Rotterdam Museum of Ethnology, The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, The Finnish School of Photography, Oxfam and Anti-Apartheid Movement in Belgium, The South African National Gallery, Duke University (USA), Cape Town University, as well as the BHP Billiton Collection and the AngloGold Ashanti Collection.
Photographic assignments have taken him to over 50 countries and his photographs have been published in major publications worldwide, including National Geographic Magazine, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine and Photography magazine (UK).
