Description: The last supper. Portrait at sunset with the full moon on the rise, bringing strict implementation of the curfew. Ombalantu, 1986. I stayed at the sprawling homestead overnight. Two modem rooms and a lounge were newly built in the centre of an otherwise pole, plaster and thatch homestead. One of the rooms, stuffy and hot, was allocated to me. I opened the windows only to allow more agitated mosquitoes into the room. I rummaged through my stuff and found the shortwave radio. I danced in circles as the music filled the room. The old lady said little. She shuffled in with a warm Coke and I drank it thirstily. The sun started setting outside. In the far distance came the faint rattle .f a 5.5 Browning. Her eyes filled with fear, and she sat down probably for the first time that day. I found the monotonous drone of oshi- Wambo radio and it sounded like the seven o’clock news. She listened intently. I asked if I could take a picture, first in English, then in Afrikaans. I cupped my hand and clicked with my tongue. She nodded. I went to fetch the camera and she was gone. I straightened the picture on the wall a bit and stared hard at the disciples. I took two frames of the barren wall, only recently plastered. The meme (mother) arrived with a porcelain bowl filled with cold water, a cloth slung over her hand, just as the sun dipped low over the makalanis (palm trees). I took the bowl and put it next to me. I picked up the camera again and motioned her to sit. She muttered under her breath again, ran a hand through her hair and waved a giggling young boy away. She picked at her dress. I turned the a s a up to 400. The light was low. She nodded o k .

Description: Herders meet with crew of Olifant tank. Ombalantu, 1988. This tank came trudging along out of the dust of the plain and the simmering heat. The tank ground to a halt some metres away, the aircon wheezed for fresh air. The all-white crew eyed me suspiciously. The boys from whom I had been asking directions suddenly became photographic models. I approached the steel monster. The gun turret pointed at my head. ‘Hey!’ I said, ‘Mind if I take a picture of these boys met julle marine?' Another cock-and-bull story followed as to why I was there. Originally procured from the British in the 1950s as the Centurion tank, these were converted and renamed the Olifant.
