Michael Nsubuga is a freelance editorial photo journalist born and raised in Uganda.
I started photojournalism in 1998 covering news and sports assignments. I have since specialized in covering all sports activities in the country. Currently I work with Uganda’s leading daily newspaper, The New Vision and I’m assigned on a daily basis to cover any sports related activities that the paper has an interest in.
Before I had worked for other newspapers including, The Monitor, Observer and Njuba Times. My pictures have been also published by different magazines locally and internationally including the defunct African Soccer Magazine. Currently some of my pictures are published in the monthly UgaSport magazine and the quarterly Golf 100magazine. I was voted best super league soccer photographer of the year in 1999 and Cricket league photographer in 2000 and twice was runner up when the awards were held up to 2004. I also hold the annual Golden Pen award for sports photography 2008 in Uganda.
Internationally, I was one of the winners of the ABB ‘What is knowledge’ photo contest in 2000. My pictures have also won commendations from the Commonwealth photographic awards. Last year I was one of the beneficiaries of a two-month World Press Photo training ahead of the World Cup and was selected for the two week AFP/FIFA training for African journalists held in Nairobi in April & May 2010 ahead of the World Cup. I cover assignments both within and outside Uganda.
