Johannesburg, South Africa
An archive of news photographs acquired by Museum Africa in 1986 from South African Associated Newspapers (later Times Media Ltd). The images are from newspapers such as the Rand Daily Mail, the Sunday Times and the Sunday Express, some now no longer published.
The collection is an important source of unique news pictures from the 1930s to 1985, a vital witness to life in South Africa during the apartheid era.
It documents many of the critical events in South Africa’s history, including the 1956 treason trial, the Rivonia Trial, the 1976 Soweto Uprisings and
the shooting of H F Verwoerd. It also covers significant personalities, theater, music and sporting events that have shaped the nation as it is today.
Over 2000 of Museum Africa images are available on Africa Media Online.
