Description: Between 1536 and the abolition of the slave trade, the Island of Gore, just off the coast at Dakar, Senegal, was used as a slave post from where hundreds of thousands of Africans were shipped to the new world to serve as slave labour on plantations. According to UNESCO the departure of the slaves to the Americas depended on the buyers. The father went to Louisiana in the USA, the mother headed for Brazil or Cuba, the child to Haiti or the West Indies. The separation was total. Ille De Gore was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. See http://webworld.unesco.org/goree/
