A feature from the Soccer World Cup 2010: Ghana
Location: Accra, Ghana
Without the luxury of grassy football fields, children who live in and around Accra have to make do with street corners, taxi ranks and disused buildings. They are either dodging hawkers in Bukum Square, or taking advantage of the quiet streets outside the mosque in Nima, and these children cannot be held back from playing the game they love.
In the words of a local child: “We enjoy football”.
It isn’t ideal for young children to use the busy streets as their football field, but many of them have no choice.
“We don’t have a football field, so we have to play on the street, even though it is not safe”.
With the FIFA World Cup soccer showcase on the horizon it is possible to see that whether players train on Astroturf in a purpose-built stadium, or they start their careers playing in the streets of Accra, it’s all about the love of the game.
