The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link, in Johannesburg, South Africa, will be the country’s first rapid rail transit system with maximum speeds of 160 to 180 km per hour. Sections of the system are nearing completion particularly between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton. This section is expected to be operational ahead of the FIFA 2010 World Cup. When completed the system will link OR Tambo International with Johannesburg, Sandton and Pretoria with 10 stations in all. Eleven trains are expected to be operational on the track at any one time handling up to 3,200 passangers during peak periods and operating 18 hours per day. Initially the system will handle 100,000 passengers per day. Collectively the trains are expected to travel 3.6 million kilometers per year.
