Southern Africa is a water stressed environment. Although a lot of attention is focused on dams and rivers many in the region rely more on ground water. The levels of this drops in drought and is susceptible to contamination of badly placed toilet facilities that could seep into the water table. Pollution including the more recent acid mine drainage problem in Gauteng threaten this non-renewable source more and more. From basic household use, farming and industry our water is under increasing threat and demand. Text and images by John Hogg.
