Description: Zenani (left) and Zindzi (right) playing a game with string ('cat's cradle; perhaps) which was popular with children at the time. Nelson Mandela's daughters were not able to visit their father in prison until the age of sixteen. They were later to be sent to school in Swaziland, no doubt a difficult and lonely decision for their mother, but her children had been hounded out of other schools, or harassed by principals, making it impossible for them to be educated in South Africa, c 1966

Mr Justice Viljoen handed down an 84-page judgement when he cleared 19 of the accused and rejected the application for freedom by the 20th Benjamin Sello Ramotse. The 19 made their application on the ground that the charges they were facing were similar to those of which they were acquitted by Mr Justice Bekker on February 16, 1970. They claimed they could not be tried twice for the same offences. They were acquitted because charges in the first trial under the Suppression of Communism Act, were very much the same as those in the present Terrorism Act.
