Description Dr. Ian Player DMS, (b. 15 March 1927), (1927-03-15) conservationist and environmental statesman, on the banks of the Dusi River. Founded the Dusi Canoe Marathon. Game ranger, international diplomat, writer, lecturer, wilderness guide, and a man of culture, the arts and psychology. With his colleague and mentor, the late Magqubu Ntombela (Zulu chief and game guard) he brought people from all walks of life and all parts of the world together to experience the importance of wilderness and the conservation thereof. Spearheaded two key conservation initiatives: Operation Rhino, which saved the few remaining southern white rhino; protected status for the Umfolozi and St. Lucia Wilderness Areas. Founded the Wilderness Leadership School.
