August 19, 1989. The Strand, Somerset West, Cape Province. Protesters of many colours / “race groups” march along the “Whites only” Strand beach. Led by Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Dutch Reformed Church cleric Allan Boesak, the beach picnic was a ââ¬Åbeach protestââ¬Â as part of mass action against apartheid laws that placed restrictions on what people could and couldnââ¬â¢t do based on their racial classification. The beach protest saw about 300 protesters succeed in reaching the beach before it was sealed off by a heavy police presence. A similar protest was held the same day at Bloubergstrand.
