Description

August 19, 1989. The Strand, Somerset West, Cape Province. Protesters of many colours / “race groups” march along the “Whites only” Strand beach. Led by Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Dutch Reformed Church cleric Allan Boesak, the beach picnic was a “beach protest” as part of mass action against apartheid laws that placed restrictions on what people could and couldn’t do based on their racial classification. The beach protest saw about 300 protesters succeed in reaching the beach before it was sealed off by a heavy police presence. A similar protest was held the same day at Bloubergstrand.
