Navratri Festival, October 2007, Shri Radha Krishna Temple, Royston Road, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa: Navratri means “Nine nights” and the annual festival is celebrated over 9 days. Held in September or October it is celebrated in accordance with the Hindu calendar. It celebrates the goddess Durga who protects humanity from evil forces. The community fasts from grains during the nine days and each evening the community gathers for prayers, dancing, feasting and celebration.
