Johnson had originally intended to buy ‘unsalted horses’ (animals which had not suffered horse sickness and were therefore not immune), because they were cheap, but Rhodes insisted that more expensive ‘salted’ mounts, those which were immune, be purchased for the Column. Despite this the Corps lost ninety horses from various afflictions by the time it reached the Umshabetsi River, a short way into Matabeleland. From an album “Occupation of Mashonaland – Views by W Ellerton Fry”. Cecil John Rhodes commissioned the Pioneers Column, accompanied by the newly formed British South Africa Company Police, to march into Mashonaland and form the core of the civilian population. Lieut. Fry was an Intelligence Officer on the Pioneer Corps and its official photographer.
