Saliem Bakari bounces a ball on his chest outside the house of his friend Richard Nifashi in Kensington, Cape Town. Richard is a refugee from Burundi who once played football in his home country’s national team before having to flee from violence. He has since played professionally in Tanzania. He came to South Africa in 2005 hoping to be discovered by one of the worlds top teams. South African laws that prohibit foreign nationals from playing in local clubs unless they have work permits so Ricahrd has been unable to play in any of the country’s local professional teams. He is currently unemployed even though he is a qualified teacher and spends most days cutting hair when there are extra clients at his friends barber shop.
