Low cost government housing cluster on the hillside beyond mud walled dwellings on the outskirts of the small town of Umzimkulu, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Until recently this area was part of the Eastern Cape province but has been transferred to KwaZuu Natal since it was an island within the latter province and was created to suit the architects of apartheid. It is still, however, a very poor area. Across the Umzimkulu river, however, are lush farmlands occupied by commercial farmers. Many rural populations have lost the vision for sustainable agriculture and most live on the returns made by family members who are migrant labourers in the commercial centres of the nation.
