The Chain Ladders get hikers to the top of the Amphitheatre. There are two stages of the ladders that have been in place for over half a century.. The Drakensberg was proclaimed a World Heritage Site in 2000 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) because it is the site of the most significant concentration of rock art south of the Sahara and because as wilderness it preserves many rare plant and animal species. It is also South Africa’s major water shed and the source of its largest rivers. It acts as a giant sponge capturing water in the wet months and releasing it through the dry months. That this wilderness is preserved in prestine condition is primary to the survival of South Africa as a nation.
