NUBIA, NORTHERN SUDAN – THE BLACK PHARAOHS – Two men walk between Jebel Barkal pyramids. Napata, the capital of the Kushite kings, is situated at the foot of Jebel Barkal. The excavations of the hill and its surrounding area uncovered several temples, a mud brick palace-complex, pyramids, and other kinds of tombs. Nine temples are identified; the biggest one is dedicated to the Egyptian god Amun. Many of the temples are decorated and have carved hieroglyphic inscriptions. The pyramids are part of the royal Napatan-Meroitic cemetery. Unlike the Egyptian pyramids which were built to hide the burial chamber, the Napatan ones are epitaphs for the deceased, who are buried in a hypogeum underneath.Nubia, Northern Sudan, March 2005 (Photo by Africa24 Media/Manoocher Deghati) ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
