Description

An Imbenge basket made by Boniswe Thungo. This Imbenge was made in the Msinga area of KwaZulu-Natal in the early 1990s. There is a long rural traditional Zulu practice of making Imbenge baskets from natural materials for use as beer pot covers. Various types of grasses, the bark of the wild banana, and the Ilala Palm are used to weave the baskets. In urban areas Zulu night watchman and miners began the practice of weaving Imbenge from scraps of wire.
