The Catholic Church on Hope Street, Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.Kokstad came into being in 1872 when Adam Kok and the Griqua people that he led established the town on land given to them by the governor of the Cape Colony after their territory in the Free State came under the rule of the Voortrekkers who had established the Orange Free State Republic in 1857. Fearing the seizure of their land, the Griquas has appealed to the Governor of the Cape Colony who gave them a land with abundant pasture, water and much game.
