STREET KID SURFERS.
Senzo is one of Durban’s many street kids, he is 14 years old and for the last month he is learning to surf.
Umthombo Centre is a street kid project in Durban, there are 40 kids involved, and Umthombo accept any child and accept that the process of re integration will be a long and sometimes difficult process. many of the children come with addiction issues and know of no life but that of the street.
Surfing has become a way of life for many of the Kids at the centre, through surfing they gain a positive outlet and an activity that provides a reason for life – the passion for surfing that has been a part of the Durban culture for many years has been seen by these street kids and like Lucky who is now sponsored by the O’neal brand of surf boards “has seen this sport and tried it out for himself”
Tom Hewitt who founded the Umthombo Centre believes that the life of the street can be overcome but there needs to be something to replace it and believes that surfing is an activity that can do this. alongside the surfing, Umthombo Centre Provides a safe place for the kids, concealing, education and offers reintegration with family.
Some of the kids go on from the centre to fine jobs on the beach front and like Lucky recognition from the professional surfing community…28 FEBRUARY – 1 MARCH DURBAN SOUTH AFRICA WORDS AND PHOTO/JOHN ROBINSON
