This iconic image of KwaZulu-Natal and Durban was captured by Steve after three years on ‘stand-by’ waiting for the correct weather. This image updates that of the late John Hone who made this photo famous when he first captured it back in 1988.Correct atmospheric conditions for this image requires the passing of a wet cold front, which is rare due to KZN’s dry winter climate. It was an unseasonal three days of rain which rinsed the atmosphere squeaky clean, dropping a blanket of snow on the Drakensberg and thus presenting the unusual weather permutation allowing this rare photographic moment.
This image was capturd at 08h20 in the morning and by mid morning of the same day, the image was no longer ‘do-able’ due to haze in the atmosphere and such is the narrow window of opportunity for this setting.
