Port Elizabeth harbour in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality has been an important port on the South African coastline since British settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s. The industrial harbour has always cut the city off from the sea. With the establishment of the deep water port at Coega, not far from the city, plans are afoot to make the Port Elizabeth harbour a clean industry harbour integrated with non-industrial activities.
