Kimberley Airport in the city of Kimberley the capital of South Africa’s Northern Cape Provice. It is famous for its diamond mining past and the likes of Cecil John Rhodes and Barney Barnato made their fortunes here during the diamond rush that started in 1869 when a 83.5 carat diamond was discovered on the Colesberg Kopje. Digging on the kopje started in 1871 and soon the kopje was reduced to a mine which eventually became the Big Hole of Kimberley. The Big Hole was the largest of the mines in the area and reached a depth of 214 metres and yielded 2722 kilograms of diamonds from 22.5 million tons of earth before it was closed in 1914. The Big Hole covers 17 Ha. Kimberley saw the birth of the De Beers Consolidated Mining Company that to this day controls the global diamond industry.
