Eastern Chad, Hadjer Hadid. One of the four schools running in the Bredjin refugee camp. In this camp, there are about 46000 refugee from neighbouring Sudan, where a devastating conflict continues. Refugees interviewed, said that the militia, the Janjaweed, supported by the Sudanese government forces, had been on a rampage of killing and looting, in the Western Darfur region of the country. So more than 150000 people had fled across the border, to Chad. At this school, with almost no books available, the learning was done by chanting out the lessons again, and again. So the aid agencies, like the United nations High Commission for Refugees, Medicines Sans Frontieres, CARE, OXFAM, The Red Cross, and others, had set up camps like this one along the border, without which there would have been, a far bigger humanitarian crises, with mass starvation.09/2004 education human rights UNHCR
