Tourists visiting the exhibition centre at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). The SAAO is the site of a series of major telescopes all relocated to a hilltop near Sutherland in the Karoo. A wide range of research in optical and infra-red astronomy is conducted at the site as well as seismographic studies especially to monitor earthquakes and nuclear explosions. It is situated at a height of 1759m above sea level in an area of the Karoo far from city lights and pollution. With it’s clear dark sky and clear weather spread throughout the year, the area is known as one of the best astronomical sites on Earth.
