Built between 2000-2005 at a cost of US$32 million, SALT is the largest telescope of its kind in the southern hemisphere. It is situated at a height of 1759m above sea level in an area of the Karoo far from city lights and pollution. With it’s clear dark sky and clear weather spread throughout the year, the area is known as one of the best astronomical sites on Earth.
