Police and soldiers outside 8115 on 16 May 1977, the day Winnie Mandela was taken to Brandfort. Her banishment was initially to
be for four years, but in fact Winnie spent
nine and a half years in the small town in
the Orange Free State. The conditions of her banishment were so stringent that she was allowed no visitors. In the foreground of the photograph wearing a light coloured dress is Winnie’s sister Nonyaniso and on the far left is photographer Peter Magubane.
