Description

Advocate Israel Aaron Maisels is hoisted onto the shoulders of the accused after they were acquitted in the Treason Trial in 1961. When Advocate Maisels died in the first year of South Africa’s democracy in 1994, Mandela’s office released a statement describing him as a ‘humanitarian at heart, and a courageous opponent of racism and injustice’. He was also described by Mandela as being ‘one of the most outstanding lawyers South Africa ever produced’.
