Alf Herbert (with his bicarb and his ulcers and his zoot shirt) opened up to G.R Naidoo in Durban and told a real showman's tale ... from the day his mother had labour pains while she was being strangled on stage in "Othello" (what a stormy birth) to the many times he has had to by-pass towns because he didn't have money to pay the bills. It is the story, too, of African Jazz. His African Jazz and Variety has been on the road for almost ten years. Alf Herbert, at 52, can keep awake for 19 out of 24 hours for days on end. Description: DM2005020710:SAED:SOCIAL:MUSIC:PERSONALITY:JUN1960 - The Show Had Everything - Phata-phata becomes show business. And those guys and dolls went wriggly-pattying gone that someone in the audience just hollered saying somebody should call the fire brigade. The Song? Man, we were not listening! Yes Indeedy. There were pretty girls, hep boys, clown, snazzy music. A shebeenised coffin, too. "FUDUWA!" (Go, man!) the audience shouted in Sotho. And things really began to pop at the Selbourne Hall, Johannesburg. One of the liveliest shows we have had for some time in progress. They called it "In Township Tonight." Description: DM2001082709:SAED:THEATRE:MUSIC:NOV1971 - Drum Beat, Joke Is On The Fortune Hunters - Phiri. Give us money. Give us freedom. Let our children eat. Let our children education. These are the cries we hear everyday. Phiri the new hit musical with a message capturing the throbbing, titillating mood of Soweto echoes these cries of the people. Although the musical is an adaptation of Ben Johnson's 300 year old play Volpone, Phiri is as fresh as tomorrow. Phiri is as frsh as tomorrow. Phiri is the brain child child of Barney Simon, who wrote the script and lyrics working with Oswald Mtshali, Wally Serote and Stanley Moitjuwadi of Drum. Veteran saxman Mackay Davashe and guitarist Cyril Magubane put the lyrics to music which has that lilting, fast beat of life in Soweto. Description: DM2000062901:SAED:MUSIC:1955/56 - University Rag Ball - Jazz has got to come right from the heart. It seems like yesterday since we last played the kazoo. Yet we played it as far back as 1929. You bought it for a sixpence, or you stretched a piece of tissue paper across a comb, and blew. Later we added the guitar to the sound of the kazoo. Here too we were looking for simple sounds. We were looking for jazz. Later we fumbled along at all kinds of instruments, Fiddling away to find jazz. But since those early days, we have discovered that there is much more to jazz than fumbling and fiddling away at simple musical sounds. We discovered that we have to learn the simple steps, study hard, adding all the time to our natural musical gift. - Article written by Todd Matshikiza, 1959 - edited to serve as caption to this picture, original date of picture publication unknown. Came Saturday afternoon and the troupe's first performance at a matinee in the City Hall. The hall was now packed with paying ears who came to listen. and what a show it was!
