    Title: Men's i-Trail 2008
Path: african.pictures / Independent Photographers / David Larsen
Description: Solo time on a hike. Hikers spread themselves out to have time alone as they descend from Mont Au Sources on the border with Lesotho, uKhahlamba Drakensberg Transfrontier Park. On a "rights of passage" process, a group of South Africans from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, take on the Drakensberg. The group are part of a process called i-Generation which seeks to reach a fatherless generation and vest in them identity, belonging and purpose. Fatherlessness is perhaps the most devastating long term outcome of the apartheid system which forced fathers to live apart from their wives and children. The i-Generation process culminates in the i-Trail (Initiation Trail) which sees the group summit the top of the Drakensberg. The Drakensberg was proclaimed a World Heritage Site in 2000 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) because it is the site of the most significant concentration of rock art south of the Sahara and because as wilderness it preserves many rare plant and animal species. It is also South Africa's major water shed and the source of its largest rivers. It acts as a giant sponge capturing water in the wet months and releasing it through the dry months. That this wilderness is preserved in prestine condition is primary to the survival of South Africa as a nation.

Description: March 11, 2015. Graffiti artist, Sonny, creates a piece on a 400m square wall at the Ogilvy offices in Bryanston, which depicts David Ogilvy as the creative eagle behind the marketing and advertising company. As one of South Africa’s most exciting young street artist of recent years, British-born Sonny has become known for using the streets of Johannesburg as his own personal gallery, as his large-scale murals have featured prominently across the urban landscape. Taking influences from his African surroundings, his vibrant work often fuses nature, architecture and fantasy. Sonny creates murals, canvasses and prints, some of which include geometric shapes that create subtle optical illusions, bringing his work to life. This self-taught artist is currently working on his first solo exhibition, to be released later this year. Photo: Moeletsi Mabe. © The Times/ Times Media
