Description: Arcade Hilimana, a 32-year-old soccer player from Burundi with his wife and children in the room they live in in Parrow, Cape Town. Arcade came to South Africa after fleeing violence in Burundi and then in the camp he was living in in Tanzania. He had been playing in Tanzania's professional league before having to leave the country. Because of South African laws that prohibit foreign nationals from playing in local clubs unless they have work permits, he started a club of foreign players called the Equatorial Stars. They meet regularly to play matches with other foreign teams.

Description: Bongani stands outside the hostel where he lives in Woodstock, Cape Town. The decrepit building is very cold in winter as there are large holes in the roof and it has very few amenities - 1 toilet and a gas stove for the 30 or so people who rent mattresses on the floor there for R150 a week. He is a Zimbabwean who has been living in South Africa for a year now. He worked as a waiter in the past but is currently unemployed. He shares a mattress with his friend – he sleeps on it during the day while his friend is at work, and roams the streets at night. Economic migration is an ongoing challenge in South Africa, where an estimated 1–3 million immigrants live. The most vulnerable are asylum seekers, refugees and undocumented immigrants, who comprise the largest share of the immigrant population. Zimbabweans make up the majority of these immigrants and often arrive without documents, visas or other documentation. As a result unscrupulous South Africans frequently exploit them. The transition for many is very difficult. They have little money to spend on accommodation and the condititions they live in can be inhumane. One commonly held view is that Zimbabweans take work away from locals. However far from being a drain on the countries resources, Zimbabweans contribute constructively to South Africa on several levels. Many are well educated, highly skilled and entrepreneurial. They frequently set up their own businesses on arrival. Despite the difficulties and hardships they encounter, the Zimbabweans I met were very positive and welcoming, which I found deeply inspiring.

Description: Zimbabweans and a Nigerian enforcer hired by the owner of the building as a heavy, sleep at a hostel in Cape Town, South Africa. The decrepit building is very cold in winter as there are large holes in the roof and it has very few amenities - 1 toilet and a gas stove for the 30 or so people who rent mattresses on the floor there for R150 a week. Economic migration is an ongoing challenge in South Africa, where an estimated 1Ð3 million immigrants live.
