    Title: Proudly South African basket
    Image Number: APN110780
    Media Id: 87_256
Path: african.pictures / The Media Bank / Izak de Vries
Description: This basket was woven from colourful wires. Viva South Africa, viva! Long live the spirit of creativity in South Africa, long live! I guess I show my age by reciting these struggle slogans, but I am proud of our collective achievements in the democratic South Africa. During the dark days of apartheid when PW wagged fingers at us, there were days when it was hard to imagine that arts and crafts would one day be able to celebrate our unity. But we overcame and here it is: Proudly South African art.

Description: DM2011060124:NIGED:SOCIAL:CULTURE:PERSONALITIES:MAR 1968. The Future Of The Emirs . Devout Northerners owe their allegiances to their faith and their emirs. Emirs of Northern Nigeria have always operated within a democratic framework. What many people did not see clearly was that their form of democracy was more by consultation and by consensus. Present day demand is for the democracy of the secret ballot. The people want to have more say about how they are governed. (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA)

Description: An ODM protester displaying his weapon of choice, a tribal panga in between participating in the destruction of the telecommunications building. On Wednesday 23rd January 2008, collective funerals were held at a church named Ligi Ndogo in Nairobi for those killed during the previous week's 3 day rallies by ODM supporters. They were protesting at the request of the Opposition leader, Raila Odinga, over the now much-debated disputed election result held 27th December. The ceremony was overseen by the ODM leadership. Unfortunately half-way through the service, when police tried to force supporters who had spilled onto the streets back into the church grounds, clashes between the GSU (General Service Unit who are specially-equipped riot police) and the service attenders ensued. The local telecommunications building was raided, looted and burned during the clashes.
