Description: DM2002052904:GCP:SOCIAL:MUSIC:MUSIC:PERSONALITY:28FEB1965 - Hail The Top 'Four Sounds' - Cliffie, Basil, Billy and Aubrey are Cape's liveliest combo. They call themselves 'The Four Sounds, and swinging, lively jazz combo is aptly named. For fouryears,'The Four Sounds' quartet have been playing at a top Cape nightspot, proof enough that they are tops. By way of an introduction, there's the leader, Clifford Moses, who plays guitar. Cliff really ia a wazard on six strings. Cliffie'sbrother, Basil still very young (and handsome) plays bass. And how. His nearrest thing toI've heard to Ray Brown in local jazz. It was a joy watching Basil plucking those strings. Basil is only an accomponist, but holds his own admirably as a soloist. Billy Dolley, the drummer, skins solightly that it seems he is merely practicing. Billy Kinnes plays a dreamy piona. (Photograph by Drum Photograph BAHA)

Description: DM2000062901:SAED:MUSIC:1955/56 - University Rag Ball - Jazz has got to come right from the heart. It seems like yesterday since we last palyed the kazoo. Yet we played it as far back as 1929. You bought it for a sixpence, or you stretched a piece of tissue paper accross a comb, and blew. Later we added the guitar to the sound of the kazoo. Here too we were looking for simple sounds. We were looking for jazz. Later we fumbled along at all kinds of instruments, Fiddling away to find jazz. But since those early days, we have discovered that there is much more to jazz than fumbling and fiddling away at simple musical sounds. We discovered that we have to learn the simple steps, study hard, adding all the time to our natural musical gift. - Article written by Todd Matshikiza, 1959 - edited to serve as caption to this picture, original date of picture publication unknown.
