Description: Mpatamatu, Zambia September 22, 2000. CHILDREN, POVERTYYoung boys bath and wash clothes in a ditch where water pumped from the nearby Roan Antelope Copper Mine is drained. Until recently Zambia's copper mines have been government-owned and the community closest to the mine, Mpatamatu, enjoyed running water at their homes. Now that the mine is privately-owned, the new owners have decided that it can no longer provide water to Mpatamatu, so its residents collect water for cooking, drinking and bathing from these drainage ditches. Description: Workers complete the final details on the Soccer City stadium as it nears completion. Much of the stadium is under ground level requiring careful drainage systems. Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa. When complete the 94,700 seater stadium will be the biggest in Africa and will play host to the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on June 11, 2010 and the final on July 11, 2010. The stadium design reflects a calabash, or African pot. The calabash, or ‘melting pot of African cultures’, sits on a raised podium, on top of which is located a ‘pit of fire’.
