This thick heavily built snake has a flat triangular head, large nostrils, pointing vertically.The body is marked with black, pale edged chevrons and bars on the tail.It ambushes its prey including rodents,birds and snakes.When disturbed it adopts a striking posture and hisses. Lives up to 14 years. Venom cytotoxic.Fangs 12-18 mm long. Its range is throughout the Africa sub continent.
