Description: This mountainious and wetland area surrounding the small village of Wakkerstroom is considered one of the top birding spots in South Africa. The extensive wetlands in the area provide a haven for birds such as cranes. The highveld grassland have thousands of different flower and orchid species which bloom in the spring and summer. The area has become very conservation concious and surrounding farmers actively protect their cranes and other rare birds such as the bald ibis.

Description: DM2008090206:EAED:SOCIAL:DEC1975 - Scandal Of The Detention Camps - Suspects were rounded up like animals. Controversy erupted over conditions in the detention camps. Accounts by detainees told of appalling conditions and brutality, and in 1959, the camps achieved world-wide notoriety after the Hola massacre. Detainees were colour-coded on arrest into white, grey and black streams. The black, being the hard-cores, were sent to the worst and most isolated camps. More than 78,000 people passed through the camps. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2008071802:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:MAY 1973 - The Mind Of An African Tyrant - Amin enjoying his tea. "Amin's impatience and wilfulness has led, directly or indirectly, to the murder of innocent people" - One day when the graves are counted and the grisly evidence is put together, Africans will try to find out what pushed Idi Amin Dada, this seemingly affable and tolerant man, into tyranny. Perhaps part of the answer goes back to his early years in the isolated north-west of Uganda. His tribe was so backward that it had no chieftaincy system, nor the kind of local democracy that many other African people take for granted. Strong personalities counted more than the wise or compliant ones. (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA)

Description: "Everywhere we found signs that the country had once been thickly populated. There were any amount of destroyed villages and cultivated lands about. The Matabele had come along and swept the country clean and now, apart from an isolated village here and there perched on the top of an almost inaccessible kopje, we could find no signs of any inhabitants," (Henry Francis (Skipper) Hoste : Rhodesia in 1890). From an album "Occupation of Mashonaland - Views by W Ellerton Fry". Cecil John Rhodes commissioned the Pioneers Column, accompanied by the newly formed British South Africa Company Police, to march into Mashonaland and form the core of the civilian population. Lieut. Fry was an Intelligence Officer on the Pioneer Corps and its official photographer.
