Description: A Taarab orchestra plays in the Cultural Music Club in Stone Town, Zanzibar. It is difficult to determine the precise history of the Taarab music in Zanzibar. However the legend has it that Taarab in Zanzibar was started by the Sultan Seyyid Barghash 1870-1888. It was this ruler who started it all in Zanzibar that later spread over all of East Africa. He imported a Taarab ensemble from Egypt to play in his Beit el-Ajab palace. Later on he decided to send to Egypt Mohamed Ibrahim to learn the music and he also learned to play the instrument know by the name of Kanuni. Upon his return he formed a Zanzibar Taarab orchestra. In 1905 Zanzibar's second music society Ikwhani Safaa Musical Club was established and continues to thrive today with around 35 active members. Ikwhani Safaa and Cultural Music Club founded at 1958 remained the leading Zanzibar Taarab orchestra.. Sound Captions: 20050702taarab1.amr20050702taarab2.amr20050702taarab3.amr

To most Nigerians, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and premier of the North, is more a legend than a man. But man he is. Description: NIGED:SOCIAL:RELIGION:CULTURE Ð JUL 1965 Ð Bello The Man Behind The Legend Ð The deeply religious Sardauna of Sokoto at a Muslim gathering.ÕÕ I would very much like not only the federation of Nigeria, but the whole world, to become Moslem. If it does, many of the complicated problems that face it today will fall away. For example, since Islam does not permit lying and cheating and double- dealing, a country that has Islam as its official religion would infinitely be a better country in which to live. It would be a country in which to love would be king, in which truth would be the basis of the conducts of all human affairs and in which equal opportunity for all would be guaranteed, not only by an act of legislation, but by the call of Islam. I will continue, both in my private and public capacities, to mix religion with politics. To me, the two are inseparable.ÕÕ ( Photograph by Matthew Faji Photographer ©BAHA)
