Description: Self-appointed parking guards direct traffic on Klipspruit Valley road, outside Orlando Stadium, in Soweto, during a Premier Soccer League game. There is very little designated parking at the stadium, which will be used as a training venue during 2010, so innovative car guards are able to make money creating informal parking lots and guarding cars. South Africa's notoriously high crime rates have caused international concern over fan safety during the upcoming 2010 World Cup, despite the fact that both FIFA and the South African police have given assurances that it will not be an issue.

She is a single mother who supports her family with her income generated from the markets. She sold spices and incense on the Grand Parade Green Point market for nearly 30 years before the relocation. She says that many well established traders have been pushed aside by city council and FIFA and are losing income from this forced removal to a smaller & less accessible site:. “It is so much smaller, which changes the atmosphere and attracts less local customers and tourists. It doesn’t have good parking facilities either.”.

She sold spices and incense on the Grand Parade Green Point market for nearly 30 years before the relocation. She says that many well established traders have been pushed aside by city council and FIFA and are losing income from this forced removal to a smaller & less accessible site: “It is so much smaller, which changes the atmosphere and attracts less local customers and tourists. It doesn’t have good parking facilities either.”(Credit: Nikki Rixon/Twenty Ten/Africa Media Online)

Description: Johann trading at the Bowling Green parking lot on Western Boulevard - the temporary site for the Green Point Informal Trading Market in Cape Town, His second-hand books stall has been running for over 30 years. He was one of the first traders on the Green Point Grand Parade. He is now a member of the committee established to help improve the situation for traders. He says that local authorities have been terrible at communicating with the traders - originally suggesting they should move to Riebeeck Square, only to then rescind stating that the Square is a heritage site which bars them from trading at that site. Subsequently the traders were told they would be moved to the parking area in front of Green Point police station. Again this proposal was later. The latest site that they have been moved to has yet to be approved by FIFA. As soon as the confirmation comes through, Johann would like to throw himself into advertising the market to help bring it back to life. (Credit: Nikki Rixo

He joined forces with his friend Mphatso and started a clothing range. Description: Soweto, Johannesburg, 20 February 2010.A young child stands in the goalposts on a dusty soccer field in Soweto. You don’t have to go very far in South Africa to come across a dusty scrap of land that has been converted into a soccer pitch by the locals. Whether on the side of the road, in a vacant parking lot, or, in this case, crammed between two suburbs in Soweto, the football field is as necessary for community life as the local shop or tavern.
