Description: Diana Mashinini plucks a chicken while Frans Msimanga looks on:. sound caption: 20050527Mashaeng1.amr. Like most small South African towns Fouriesburg was once a study in inequality. Across the valley in Mashaeng a teenager walks the dusty road home from school. The inequalities, however, are not nearly as marked now as poverty has become the condition of the whole town. Rural farming communities are under pressure in South Africa with the uncertainties in the agricultural sector compounded by rapid urbanisation.

By mid 2004 in the Darfur region of western Sudan, ongoing conflict had displaced approximately 1.2 million people, most of whom were fleeing terror attacks by armed militia that included large-scale killings and abductions, including of children, as well as gang rapes, looting and burning of villages and stealing of livestock. Thousands have died from these attacks or from disease and tens of thousands of others have gathered in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs), with little or no belongings and without adequate shelter, food or safe water and sanitation. An additional 120,000 people, primarily children and women, have fled across the border into neighbouring Chad. An estimated two million people have been affected by this crisis and are being further threatened by the imminent rainy season which

Today, according to the United Nations, The Gambia is one of the 48 Least Developed Countries, ranking 155th out of 173 on the 2005 Human Development Index. More than half of the population lives on less than a dollar a day, with most of the population surviving on subsistence agriculture. Currently the Gambia’s major exports are groundnuts, fish, palm kernels and cotton lint.

No access to chalk means that Klu needs to mark the pitch by drawing a line in the sand. . As the bustle of Accra gives way to the palm-lined beaches leading to the village of Teshie, the nationwide love for the game of football becomes evident. Ghana’s qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa has only emphasized the role soccer plays in the area. Soccer pitches, formal and informal - dusty courtyards, sandy beaches, deserted buildings and empty rooftops – are either the scene of diligent preparation or frenzied action.
