Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa gave his first State of the Nation Address at the Cape Town Provincial Parliament in Cape Town on Wednesday 3rd June 2009. He outlined an ambitious programme for his newly formed Government that closely adhered to the ANC election manifesto. One of his top priorities was to fire and bring to account any underperforming Ministers or civil servants who fell short in implementing the Government targets within tight deadlines. These included creating new jobs, eradicating poverty and improving the education and health systems in South Africa. . Jacob Zuma specifically proposed that his new Government would create half a million jobs in 6 months and 4 million over 5 years as well as halving the levels of poverty by 2014.
