Description: The Drostdy Gate is seen in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape of South Africa on Monday November 8, 2004. The Drostdy Gate was designed by Major C.J. Selwyn in 1835 and built by the Royal Engineers in 1841 or 1842. The purpose of hisgateway was to provide an entrance to the military establishment which was to be on the site of the unoccupied and unused Drostdy House grounds. At a later date sentry boxes and walls on both sides of the gateway were added. Framed in the Gateway's arch is the clock tower of the main administration block of Rhodes University which was based on a design by Sir Herbert Baker and Francis Kendall and incorporates the site of the old Drostdy. Founded on 31 March 1904, Rhodes is unique among South African universities in that it has no natural hinterland from which to draw its students. The majority come from far afield. Description: Seen in the foreground is the winged figure of Peace that graces a monument with the Commemoration Chapel in the background in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape of South Africa on Monday November 8, 2004. The monument is to "the Men of Albany" who lost their lives in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. The sculpture is by Stanley Nicholson Babb and Rudyard Kipling specially wrote the inscription. The bronze relief-plaque on it honouring the Pioneer women depicts the legendary heroism of Elizabeth Salt, who reputedly carried a keg of gunpowder to the troops during the Battle of Grahamstown on 22 April 1819. She benefited from a noteworthy Xhosa tradition not to harm women in warfare. In 1844 a gathering of Settlers was called to consider how best to observe the Silver Jubilee of the settlement. Rev. William Shaw proposed that a chapel be built, to be called Commemoration Chapel and that the foundation stone be laid on the 10th April 1845 "this being the anniversary of the arrival of the 1st

The owner-designer of the Observatory was a watchmaker and jeweller, Henry Carter Galpin, who lived in Grahamstown from 1850 until his death in 1886. Having checked the time by the position of the sun in his observatory, Galpin would set the clock on the tower. In their turn, the people of the town would adjust their clocks and watches to the time on the tower. (Photo by Christine Nesbitt)

Through the system of lenses and mirror in the revolving turret in its roof, this ingenious device projects an enchanting full colour live panorama of the town and its activities onto a flat viewing surface in a darkened room. The owner-designer of the Observatory was a watchmaker and jeweller, Henry Carter Galpin, who lived in Grahamstown from 1850 until his death in 1886. A successful businessman with seven sons, he still found time to pursue his interests of astronomy, optics, natural history, music and practical mechanics - all of which are reflected in the house he designed.
