Description: The Mimosa Mall, Bloemfontein is the centre of the consumer life of the city. Malls have taken over as the new temples, operating in the life of secular society once held by the church or temple. They are places to see and be seen. They are the organising centre around which people can meet and participate in community. The only thing is one's belonging in this community is the ability to consume. They are also places of worship where what is most valued is pursued with varying degrees of passion.Sound Caption: 20050526Mimosamall.amr

Description: The Gateway Theatre of Shopping was South Africa's biggest shopping centre when it was first buit in 2005 (see http://www.gatewayworld.co.za/index.php). It is the anchor project for massive development to the North of Durban in an area called Umhlanga Ridge. Like Sandton is to Johannesburg, a new commercial city centre which left jo'burg central without the capital to maintain it, so Umhlanga Ridge is to Durban.Malls have taken over as the new temples, operating in the life of secular society once held by the church or temple. Description: The Pavilion shopping centre, Westville, Durban, is one of two mega shopping complexes in the city. Such regional shopping centers have taken on religious significance in a global culture which defines belonging in terms of the ability to consume. These complexes are the temples to consumerism fulfilling many of the functions that church or temple used to fulfill - place of worship, place to see and be seen, place for community gatherings, place upon which to centre one's identity etc. The problem in a nation like South Africa with an increasing gap between the rich few and the poor masses is that for many crime becomes the only access to belonging.

Dave Holden took over the leadership of the church planting movement in southern Africa with the mandate of appointing local leaders to take over spheres of responsibility. Newfrontiers is a church planting movement which emerged in the South of England in the 1960s and has spread to many nations around the world. Under Simon Pettit this charismatic reformed church movement took on a thoroughly multi-cultural face in Africa highly relevant to the new South Africa recovering from generations of racial segregation

Description: Pete Brooks is prayed for. As a family the Brooks' are on their way to Australia to take over leadership of the Australasia region of Newfrontier's work in the wake of Simon Pettit's death. This was during the days of prayer and fasting held in Pietermaritzburg in October 2005, nine months after Simon Pettit, leader of Newfrontiers Africa had died of a heart attack. Dave Holden took over the leadership of the church planting movement in southern Africa with the mandate of appointing local leaders to take over spheres of responsibility.
