Description: DM1999102925:GHAED:BEAUTIES:AUG1959 - It looked like any ordinary day the the beach at Accra. Then it happened. Out of the clear blue sky, it happened. The biggest confusion and mayhem an Accra beach has ever known. There were several surfboard accidents, near-fights, a din of wistling and whooping. And all because of a chocolate, a chocolate-coloured 'joy-forever', Anne Barbara Hyde. (Photograph by Christian Gbagbo © Bailey's Archives) swimsuit, covergirl, fashion

Description: DM1999121013:SAED:POLITICS:FOREIGN:MAR1959 - All Africa Met Here - All Africa is waking up, growing up, joining up. We have arrived at one of the great turning points in history. For then days Accra, and the whole of Ghana, played host to over 300 men and women from more than 25 African countries who had gathered for the conference. Their subject was: The Furure of Africa. The delegates were at the conference for two reasons. To work out how best Africa could be freed from colonialism and imperialism and to set the foundations for a Union of Independent African States. Accra's Community Centre Hall was crowded to hear the opening address by Dr Kwame Nkrumah. (Photograph by Christian Gbagbo © Baileys Archive)

When Ministers and top civil servants put down their pens, pushed away their cups of tea and put on their football boots, the stage was set for a great match. It soon became a duel between two giant goalkeepers. At one end, Sir Tsibu Darku, and at the other 20-stone, Mr. T. Menson. When the Ministers and Ministerial Secretaris met a team of senior officials of the Cocoa Marketing Board at Accra Stadium. Of course the players brought off more laughs than dazzling movements - and the people loved them for it. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

But how can these States deal with the two pressing problems of housing and industrialisation, not in fact even taking into account other sources of national expenditure like Education, Health and Social Services? They are counting garden eggs which they are helping to sell at the Accra Market. They wake early, work till late. No play for them. It's a familiar sight to us all. Seven and eight-year-olds hawking goods through our streets. But can we tolerate near-babies working eight, nine hours a day in our country? Child labour has been part of the Ghanaian traditional life of the country from time immemorial. Kids who should be sitting in school are doing heavy work in carpenters' and blacksmith' shops. Some of them who work in private homes are not much older than ten. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)
