Description: Kibera is Africa's largest slum with over 550,000 people (one out of every five Nairobians) living in very confined and squalid conditions. This view from a vantage point overlooking Kibera shows the sprawling mass of houses, each with multiple families in, as far as the eye can see. A hillside of rubbish lies in the foreground, slowly growing and covering up all surrounding vegetation.

Kibera is Africa's largest slum with over 550,000 people (one out of every five Nairobians) living in very confined and squalid conditions. Description: A fierce rainstorm has flooded part of a street in Kibera slum, forcing shoppers to walk on the muddy pavements rather than on the flooded road. Kibera is Africa's largest slum with over 550,000 people (one out of every five Nairobians) living in very confined and squalid conditions. The grey overcast skies add to the mood of depression and hopelessness felt as you walk through the slum.

Description: A man braves the muddy road conditions to pull his cart loaded with building materials through the streets of Kibera. Kibera is Africa's largest slum with over 550,000 people (one out of every five Nairobians) living in very confined and squalid conditions. The rains have produced very muddy city streets, but business must continue and the cart must be pulled through both flooded streets and mud. Rusty tin-roofed shacks line the street behind, many operating as little shops and stores.

Description: A busy city street in Kibera slum has many people walking along it, doing their day's shopping or walking to work. Kibera is Africa's largest slum with over 550,000 people (one out of every five Nairobians) living in very confined and squalid conditions. The train in the centre of the photo carries wealthy goods on the main line from Mombassa to Nairobi. The train's brightly coloured containers are the only splash of colour to temporarily light up the browns and greys of the tin-roof shacks.

Description: A group of children huddle around a fire on one of Kibera's city streets, trying to keep warm during a cold wet day. The wide range of expressions vary from happy and smiling, to hiding their faces with their hands. Kibera is Africa's largest slum with over 550,000 people (one out of every five Nairobians) living in very confined and squalid conditions. Children are often the hardest hit residents of slum areas, yet show a remarkable resilience and zest for life.

People who live in shacks beside the river are often forced to vacant their properties during heavy rains when the river banks flood. Description: Children from Kibera slum play outside their homes, in very unhygienic conditions. Rubbish covers the area like a thick vegetation mat, and is also deposited by the polluted stream flowing at the bottom of their back yard. Children are highly at risk living in this environment. Latrines with numbers on the green doors line the back of the photograph, providing a play space for children who watch the stream below them. The houses press up against the tropical forest jungle in the distance, hemming the people into a confined space. Many people's washing hangs on ropes strung between buildings, giving spashes of colour to the otherwise brown and grey shacks. Description: An ODM supporter in the Kibera slum of nairobi takes a moment from throwing stones at GSU personnel during the last day of mass action called by ODM (Orange Democratic Movement) to protest against the disputed 2007 election results. While creeping around the Kibera slum trying to avoid the attention of the GSU personnel he saw my camera pointing in his direction. At first he thought I was GSU personnel and dived for cover but when he realised that I was holding a camera (and not a gun) he stopped a second to give a cheeky pose before continuing on his way..
